Sie spricht über die Bombardierung der Stadt, den Tod ihres Mannes und Selbstmordgedanken zu Beginn der Kämpfe um Charkiw. Sokolova beschreibt ihre erste Begegnung mit einem Deutschen, erinnert sich an die Arbeit im Labor des Instituts und versucht, die Ausrüstung zu retten. Sie erwähnt die Lebensmittelknappheit, das Herstellen von Streichhölzern zum Verkauf und Tausch auf dem Basar.
